What was once the concert venue Freebird Live has transformed to a reimagined mixed-use space where Surfer the Bar and Rip Curl now call home. The 1920s-era structure was purchased by Jacksonville-based Trevato Development Group who leases it to the current occupants.
With a two-story layout in sight of the beach and across the street from the SeaWalk Pavilion, the 10,000-square-foot restaurant and retail space offer patrons unique beach-themed experiences – from live music and balcony seating to food truck fare and cocktails to surf gear and clothing.
Developed by Surf Concepts, LLC, and inspired by Surfer Magazine, Surfer the Bar offers a coastal vibe, surf media and live entertainment much like its namesake at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Oahu. It features two main bars inside and as well as a 1962 Airstream inside the venue offering a surfer-inspired menu. The décor includes award-winning photography unique to its locale, and in partnership with the magazine, offers high-profile events with surf legends. Surfer Magazine, owned by a360media (previously American Media, Inc.) is known as the “bible of the sport” and is considered the foremost authority on surf culture since 1960. Rip Curl was founded in 1969 and is one of the world’s most recognized and respected brands. It has been at the forefront of the surf and snow scenes since its creation. Rip Curl specializes in surf gear including wetsuits, backpacks, board bags and other surf merchandise.
The building was designed by the award-winning firm Cronk Duch Architecture who has also been involved in numerous projects throughout the beaches area including Atlantic Beach’s Town Square and the mixed-use center featuring Salt Life.
